| The beautiful mountainous village of Drakia is located
in the centre of the Pelion peninsula at an altitude of 500 meters.
It is 18km from the city of Volos and 8km from the neighbouring
village of Agria. Drakia is a very important village in Pelion with
regards to the history and development of the region. |

|
The village was built in 1655 by workmen who came
from Epirus, on the western side of Greece, and who lived in the
area. Ioannis Pagonis, a very famous painter also came here to live
and work from Epirus.
Many of the old houses, mansions and churches all over Pelion house
frescoes and artwork by Ioannis Pagonis, and these are very big
attractions for visitors to the region.
Like many other villages all across the Pelion peninsula, Drakia
has a main square which is the focal point of the village. It is
said the main square of Drakia is actually the oldest in all of
Pelion. With beautiful scenery and luscious nature and trees all
around, Drakia is truly a very charming and picturesque village. |
| Visitors to Drakia can enjoy lovely walks along the
old cobble stoned paths, and enjoy a journey past some of the traditional
houses, admiring the delightful views and gorgeous natural beauty
that thrives in Pelion. The church of Agios Ioannis is well worth
visiting, where you can see some of the frescoes by Ioannis Pagonis.
Drakia is also home to the "Triantafillou" mansion, which
is said to be one of the oldest in Greece. |
Drakia is a wonderful base from which visitors to
Pelion can spread out and visit some of the other interesting parts
of the region.
The lovely imagery and views are inspiring and unique, and one cannot
help but to fall in love with this unique region.
The mountainous village of Hania and the famous Pelion centre of
Agriolefkes are located close by and are easily accessible via a
new road that connects Drakia and Hania.
During the winter months, the ski centre of Agriolefkes is filled
with visitors who have come here to enjoy the first rate ski facilities.
